Kay has direct responsibility for the management of the SLO Library as well as regional responsibility for the other coastal libraries.
Kay has over 30 years of professional library experience in public and special libraries as library director, reference manager, library consultant and children’s librarian. In the Washington, D.C. area Kay worked in public library management, embassy libraries, and as consultant in reference, technical services and management at the Library of Congress, and in USAID, Department of State, Peace Corps, and the Veterans Administration.
Internationally, Kay established and managed the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Library in Mogadishu, Somalia for the United Nations and USAID. From 1994-2001, Kay was CEO and Library Director of the American Library in Paris and its four branches in France, a public library founded by the American Library Association. As Director, she played a major role in raising the visibility of the library, helped launch a successful fundraising campaign to renovate the library, and developed cultural programs with celebrities such as Gregory Peck, Gore Vidal and William Styron. She also revitalized the Evenings with an Author programs and presented other cultural events to promote artists.
Kay has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with Honors and a Masters of Library Science with Honors from the University of Maryland. She is a recipient of the University of Maryland International Alumna of the Year Award and the Alumna of the Year Award from the College of Library and Information Services.
