The 2014 SLO Friends of the Library Annual Luncheon was a huge success. More than 80 members and guests attended and were held spell bound by Felicia Perkeris Brown as she related her experience in escaping from Lithuania during WW II and after. She and her family traveled on foot and horse cart through war-ravaged Prussia, Poland and Germany before finally being placed in a British-run refugee camp at the end of the war.
Unfortunately, their troubles did not end with the end of the war as the British tried to encourage them to return to their Russian held homeland by reducing their care and food in the camp.
Her book, God, Give Us Wings, is a memoir of love and sacrifice by her parents and is a very readable, realistic portrayal of civilians’ fight for survival in war time.
This year’s luncheon was held at the Madonna Inn’s main ballroom and we received many positive comments from the attendees for the venue, the meal and the speaker. The luncheon was managed by FOL Sally Hillis with the help of many of the Friends’ Board Members.
